Praying at the Mazar-e-Sharif

Your mums are gonna love us. For the first of a new series profiling the top adventure trips around, we’ve found this – a journey in to a starkly beautiful country that’s been off the tourists’ maps for 30 years.

What: 15-day trip to Afghanistan

Where: Afghanistan: Kabul, Bamian, Band-e-Amir, Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh and Herat.

When: 8-22 June 2010

Who with: Untamed Borders, www.untamedborders.com

How much: £1,390 (excluding flights)

Why it’s awesome
“From Alexander the Great to the hippies on the trail to India in the 1960s, Afghanistan has always been a legendary place to visit,” says James Willcox of Untamed Borders. “The landscape and the hospitality are fantastic, and the country offers the chance to witness a way of life untouched by mass tourism – or any tourism for that matter.

“Untamed Borders is offering a classic trip visiting all the major places of interest that are safe. It starts in Kabul and heads off to the Hazarajat, stopping at Bamian and seeing the lapis lazuli blue lakes of Band e Amir. When we return to Kabul we’ll give you our special day/night tour of the city, seeing how the Afghan population live during the day and the ex-pats live at night. Then we’ll cross the Hindu Kush via the Salang Pass to visit the blue mosque of Hazrat Ali in Mazar e Sharif and the ancient silk road city of Balkh.

“And no trip to Afghanistan is complete without a visit to Herat,” he finishes. “It has the largest collection of ancient buildings and gives an idea of what Afghanistan was like architecturally before the decades of war. This trip flies you there and back to Kabul.”

The Untamed Borders trip
Untamed Borders trips only take small groups. They are led by an English guide and an Afghan fixer who has years of experience working with journalists and photographers allowing safe access to the sights and culture of the region.
