Silkbody do a slightly more technical fabric than the Silkspun (the Cellular range with no cotton content) but this long sleeve top will still offer great performance in most travel situations, especially with the additional temperature control options given by the zip neck and snug high collar. Sleek and stylish, this would be an ideal baselayer for snowsports as well as an all purpose travel top.

In a line: On piste comfort or après ski style.

Helly Hansen's Verglas gives more than a nod in the direction of the company's snow sports expertise. It's a superb looking jacket, with eye catching printed high wear areas and colour contrast zip details, but it's also a serious performer. A detachable snowskirt means it's as useful for snowsports as for trekking or Alpine mountaineering, and it'll fasten into waterproof trousers too. There's venting aplenty with pit zips and generous mesh lined side pockets, while the adjustable hood with ventilation holes at the chin will accommodate a helmet with ease. Fit is neat at the hips.

In a line: Ski tourers and Alpinists will love this.

If you like your hiking gear to look less like you hang out on the side of a mountain and more so with the right crowd then the Dakota's work wear inspired design will suit you well. That said, you can still expect high performance from the Helly Tech fabric with enough features for all your outdoor needs. It's fully mesh lined with storm flap on main zip, two chest and two hand warmer side pockets, removable and adjustable hood, three internal pockets (one MP3 player specific) hem draw cord and Velcro adjustable cuffs.

In a line: Industrial styled protection for the great outdoors

If you like your waterproof jacket to have all the features necessary for enjoying the outdoors in inhospitable conditions, but prefer a more funky urban styling, then the Navajo should be right up your high street. With a square cut bomber jacket type cut, the Navajo may look fashionable, but still offers good features and technical performance, making sure you look cool while staying dry. Reasonably lightweight, even with its mesh lining, there's a concealed detachable hood, fleece lined collar, two chest pockets, two zipped side pockets, internal pocket, hem drawcord, front stormflap.

In a line: For outdoor urban activists.
